Certainly worth posting there, but I seem to recall that in similar cases it is going to need a court ruling as the Land Registry does not make decisions on these matters it only implements the documents and court orders it receives...
If we're talking about the Northern Rock charge, it shouldn't be rocket science to figure out who was the last creditor (can't remember off the top of my head how and where the accounts were split up but the info should be available).

The difficulty often is if the account is closed without the charge being released, and the lender (or their successors) then claim not to have any records and refuse to discharge the security. It can generally be sorted by persuading the front line staff at the bank to pass it to their "awkward cases" department but that sometimes requires a complaint.

    user1977,

Thank you for your reply, I have followed the Northern Rock trail for over a year now.

After the Government bail out NR was split into two, the banking side was bought by Virgin Money and NRAM took over the bad debts plus mortgages but remained in Government control, NRAM was dissolved in 2021 and sold to Davidson Kempson who then split it further with Citii and Landmark Mortgages.

Virgin Money did identify BIL's account but said it had been closed and written off so they had no records and therefore could not help. NRAM said they never had any accounts they could identify with the account number so no help whatsoever.

Think my next move will be to contact the CEO (David Duffy) at Virgin Money and see if he can offer advice.

Just an update, which may be of use to anyone else who encounters this problem. We have eventually heard from the Executive team at Virgin Money, the account has been located and the charge has been written off. Their Solicitors will be sorting this out with Land Registry at long last.
