Value,prices scrap metals

Hi all, is there a way of finding out if the value /money a scrap metal merchant is paying up is correct or fair; there are a few scrap metal merchants in the area however as they dont have prices up on a bill board display and having spoken to the nearest one a few times he said prices can change daily, how is one to know if they are giving a fair price?

As dealer has said, prices vary daily, supply & demand. Unless you are dealing in bulk, a "fair price" is what ever you consider it to be at the time, do you want the money and junk gone or not?
It's the same with scrap cars, sometimes it's twenty quid, sometimes you pay them to take it away
Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens
  • Well its not junk its heavy metals
  • Don't leave any metal hanging around, including garden furniture, fridges and freezers, old boilers and hot water cylinders. Keep it all out of sight. We have experienced theft of garden furniture as well as the theft of items awaiting collection.

I had a very heavy wrought iron gate along with some other bits. Inquired at the local scrap metal place and they won't take anything that a magnet will stick to.
If it is the 'wrong' type of metal, they told me just to leave it out for the scrap metal guys. Said I would get around a tenner for 100kgs!

That seems weird to me. My local scrappy takes ferrous (attracted to magnets) and non-ferrous. From personal experience I would say that it's not worth collecting cans and tins unless you can do them in large quantities. I kept all our cans and tins for a year and got a fiver. But we have done well out of boilers, hot water cylinders, old radiators and metal parasol bases.

Nitrous gas canasters may be better as there heavier than 7up cans

Good day, does anyone know if washing machines and cookers have any valuable metals in them as I see them left on the sidewalk occasionally?

There's usually some copper in the motors. But also a lot of concrete block inside washing machines...
