Depends what you mean by fasting. If you mean stopping eating completely then probably not, but I have seen a few people on here who do the 5:2 intermittent fast which is probably the healthier version.

We did 5:2 in order to lose weight and did well. We now maintain by doing 16:8 every day.  We eat breakfast around noon.

Once retired we found three meal a day were too much.

  • Works for me to help control weight as I only eat during a specific window of time.

It's not for everyone but it certainly works for me.

I had to fast for over 27 hours when I had a colonoscopy. I was able to drink beef consommé, squash as long as it wasn't red and certain fizzy drinks. I found a can of fizzy drink just before bedtime helped stave off hunger pains to get to sleep. I was surprised that the following day when I reach 24+ hrs that I didn't feel as hungry as I did at certain times the day before.

We regularly have breakfast later in the morning (16:8) and miss out lunch.
On a Sunday, we miss breakfast and have an early Sunday dinner, then a pud later in the afternoon and a sandwich or cheese and crackers early evening. Helps to maintain / loose weight.

Surely most people don't eat during the 8 hours they are asleep unless i have been doing it wrong all my life.

Seems a bit irresponsible to my mind to suggest a money saving tip is simply not to eat.

    Dangerous, even.
  • Be careful. Shane Warne did a water fast just before he passed. Really sad!

nothing the matter with fasting if done properly.  many people can't and shouldn't do a full fast for various reasons.  I'm one of those but have done severe cut backs at times.  I find that cutting back on carbohydrates is doable and just means I feel hungry but not in a "I must eat" kind of way.  So that with lots of water and consommé (usually as a cuppa soup) works nicely.

  • I did the 5:2 for about a year.  I was allowed 500 calories at the time 2 days a week but it's now 800.  The Michael Moseley book explains it well however if you have any type of eating disorder, you should avoid it.  I have a binge eating disorder  so for me it was a disaster.
  • madbat, have you ever taken probiotics, i think they can help with feeling hungry. i certainly dont get the extreme hunger feeling i used to.
