Declare breach of annual allowance when no tax is due?

For 22/23 I exceeded my annual
allowance. I completed the HMRC calculator using the figures provided by my pension provider and no tax is due, this year or the last three years I input? as I have enough remaining allowance from 2019/20 onwards to carry forwards. Am I correct in understanding I essentially take no action and don't declare this on my self assessment as no tax is due?

I called the self assessment helpline but the advisor seemed to be confused and thought I was referencing earned income.

thanks in advance.

  • You can’t carry forward any unused personal allowance and pension payments are treated as earned income.

Could you be more specific and give us the numbers for the amount of pension taken and other income?

I think the op means they exceeded the annual allowance for pension contribution purposes.

Not pension income for tax purposes.

But some clarity would be helpful

We definitely need clarification, payments and tax due led me to believe the OP was talking taking out rather than contributing.
  • Apologies for any ambiguity. This is about how much my pension savings have grown. Last year I exceeded the annual allowance of £40,000 so my pension provider recently wrote to me to advise me to check if I had enough spare allowance to carry over from previous years by using the HMRC calculator. I am not taking that pension at the current time. Hope this makes sense.

This is a Defined Benefit pension then?
  • This gov.uk page might help. It specifically says:

Carry forward your unused annual allowance

You can carry forward unused annual allowances from the 3 previous tax years. You do not need to report this to HMRC.

  • Thanks, yes it's defined benefit. Many thanks for the info above also
