Self Assessment query

I have been completing self assessments for a number of years due to receiving Child Benefits and being a higher tax earner
Talking to some friends last night they said I can claim for items that I need to purchase for my job.
I am a Headteacher and I bought a laptop in January 2022. Can I claim for this (late in the 2022-2023) self assessment return.
Thank you for any advice.

If you need a laptop for work then presumably your employer would provide one.samantharay@hotmail.com said:I have been completing self assessments for a number of years due to receiving Child Benefits and being a higher tax earner

There isn't any in the budget for items like that. Thank you. I have bought it already, back in Jan 2022 and didn't realise that you could claim. Thank you.0

I don't think it's quite as straightforward as you have been led to believe.

Amending your 2021-22 Self Assessment return is straightforward but HMRC do have the right to investigate any returns. Or amended returns.
