Can I set up a LTD company or register as a sole trader for a BTL that was setup on a a non LTD company mortgage?

I don’t think you need to register as self employed (sold trader) for BTL? There would be no benefit in doing so. You just complete the property section of the self assessment. That’s what I do.
If you want the property under a limited company you would have to sell/transfer it from your private ownership to the company which may or may not be financially beneficial depending on all sorts of factors. Best bet would be to talk to an accountant who can show you all the options.
