Ill Health Certificate.

Hey everyone. 

I’m going through the application process for Ill health retirement from my employer, and notice that if successful, I’ll be sent an “ill health retirement certificate”.

Now, as I have several other small, private small pensions I may wish to access, will this certificate suffice in being allowed access to all of them, or will I have to make individual ill health applications??

You'll need to make individual applications to each scheme. They may have different definitions of what constitutes ill health for the purposes of ill health retirement, which is why a scheme-specific ill health certificate almost certainly won't suffice - but no harm at all in referring to this when you contact the other pension providers and asking if further medical evidence is required.

Being successful in claiming Ill health retirement for a workplace pension as you are unable to work is different to claiming pension funds via a terminal early payment where life expectancy may be less than 12months. Good luck

So, technically, it’s possible for one scheme to deny you early access to your pension, while another scheme does?

Yes. It depends on the rules of each scheme. If you don't meet their definition of ill health, you don't qualify for ill health retirement.
