Hi everyone

I'm currently awaiting defaults before starting a dmp. My current ridiculously expensive phone contract isn't up till Feb...
My stupidly high cost broadband isn't up till next June.

How do people on DMPs who have waited for defaults get a new sim only contract and / or   broadband? I am assuming both always require credit checks and that defaults mean  refusals?

If you are more likely to default providers will look to minimise their losses if you do, so you are likely to be charged upfront for equipment, delivery, and installation.  I am guessing these products and prices factor in a certain percentage of disconnections and you are unlikely to get an introductory offer.

I've never known people to be unable to get broadband or mobile, but as above, you may find the whole market is not available.

By shopping smartly though, you should be able to get functionality for less than at present
  • I'm not sure you get credit checked for a SIM only monthly contract, as there is no actual "risk" for the supplier - you fail to pay and they simply disconnect your service. I could be wrong on that though. Certainly if it was a major issue we'd be overwhelmed with people here who were unable to get broadband or mobile - or rather, maybe we wouldn't as they wouldn't be able to get online!

  • There is a fine distinction between a monthly contract (an agreement to pay each month for a particular period) and regularly purchasing time-limited plans (which do not give a guarantee of continuous service).
  • Sorry I'm so late in saying this

    Thank you all

If it's a pay up front SIM like Smarty, GiffGaff etc then they don't do credit checks as there's no need to. There is no risk at all to them as they just let you use what you've paid for.

Defaults don't mean no credit at all, they just limit what you can get. I have four defaults but I had no trouble getting a £6 a month SIM only deal with I.D. Mobile, and I've changed broadband supplier numerous times with no problem. It's relatively low risk for them as they can suspend your service if you don't pay, and they are vital services so they'd be at the top of most peoples lists to pay.
  • Thanks Rob. That's brilliant. Thank you
