Google says it is possible to withdraw from my amazon gift card balance to my bank account.  but I'm stumped when it comes to actually doing it on amazon. I didn't expect them to make it easy but I can't see how to even start the process.
I can see there may be an issue with the parts of the balance that came from an actual gift card but the majority of the funds came directly from my bank account.
Anyone managed to withdraw from an amazon gift card balance?

Honestly in my mind this breaks the hallowed rule of giftcards: that they can't be redeemed for cash.

Whole ecosystems are based upon this principle, incentive schemes could be effectively turned into money printers.

A cursory google search yielded some unreputable sources, one of which claims you can add the funds to Amazon Pay then send the balance to a bank account, but I doubt this is actually true:

What payment methods can be used with Amazon Pay?

Any of the payment methods available in your Amazon account can be used with Amazon Pay. Note that Amazon gift cards entered into your Amazon account can't be used when making purchases with Amazon Pay on third-party websites.

I'd be suprised if they didn't allow giftcards to be used on non-Amazon sites, but had no issue with you transferring the balance to a bank account.

My gut says it's (intentionally) impossible.

Agreed but unfortunately on the internet you can always find the answer you want to hear, regardless whether it is correct or not.

  • There isn't a direct way.

To avoid loss you can buy on Amazon gift cards for other shops - Morrisons, Argos etc.

If you really after cash you could buy giftacards and try to sell them at some places like cardyard etc. but expect 10-15% loss of the value.

Google isn’t always right and can sometimes show dodgy ways to do things.

Personally I would ask any friends if they are buying anything from Amazon, buy it for them and let them pay you in cash. Or can you pay for Amazon fresh items so at least you get groceries?

    Thanks to all who replied.
Yeah this could be the best way to go. I thought I would be buying from amazon for a particular item but now I'm not sure, so at least I have other 3rd party retailer options 👍
  • I've just been told by Amazon...."Note that in accordance with Amazon.co.uk Balance and Amazon.co.uk Gift Card Terms and Conditions, you cannot transfer your gift card balances to another account or request a cash value payment."

This is all well and good if the money started off as a gift card but.. In my situation, I purchased a TV using my linked bank details but when it arrived we realised is was going to be too big so without un- boxing it, we requested a refund and sent it back.
We. On the same day we ordered a smaller tv.
The refund for the first TV came through a few days later and was added to my account as a gift card balance.  We need the cash back in our bank account but can't get it back!  This seems wrong.

I believe when you request the refund there is an option for it to go to your amazon account (what you would see as a gift card balance) or to your original payment method. If they processed it (i.e. you spoke to them and asked for a refund) they should've asked you which you required. Unsure if anything can be done once it has been added to the amazon balance unfortunately. Your refund confirmation email should confirm the method of refund
