Opos Limited harassment

There was a random letter to me sent to a family member’s address a couple of months ago, from Capquest saying they had passed a debt of £130 to Opos. I have sent several Prove It letters. There is absolutely no way I owe this because I haven’t used ANY credit, except credit cards paid off in full monthly, for at least twenty years. My credit score doesn’t show any debts or late payments. I’m at my wits’ end as Opos bombard me with emails demanding my full name, date of birth and address. I almost feel I should just pay this so-called debt in an attempt to get rid of them, but what’s to stop them from inventing more fake debts?

Did you send the prove it letters by E Mail or snail mail?

If E Mail that's how they got your E Mail address.

    Block them and ignore.

Did you not get a response from the "provit" letter ?

The information they are asking for is for data protection purposes, I`m guessing you sent the "provit" by email, and omitted those details, which is why you got this response.

As this appears to be bothering you somewhat, you should sent the letter in the post, including your name and address details, that is the only way you will get a resolution to this matter.

Aside from that, a £130 debt will not be chased for that long, they will soon get tired and turn there attention elsewhere should you choose to ignore it.

Do I have to give them my actual address?

Yes, by email. They state that I have to give them my address, full name and date of birth before they tell me what data they hold on me. They obviously don’t have my address because they sent the original letter to a family member. If I owed a debt I would pay it but I don’t.

Do what Sourcrates said send them a letter by snail mail with your name and address details but not your date of birth.

Debts are bought and sold in bulk, sometimes with very little information attached to them.

Say they buy an account in the name of a John Smith, when the identity of a debtor is in doubt, debt purchasing companies will carry out a trace, if that doesn't bear fruit, they go on, what we refer to, as a fishing trip, they write/email/text every John Smith of ABC Road, London, hoping one of those John Smiths will bite, and contact them.

The debt may not be yours, interesting why it was sent to a family members home, do they share the same name ?

Only by confirming your details to them will you either be exonerated or put before the mast.
Now its not a massive amount of money they are chasing, debt collection goes in computer generated cycles, and the computer will just keep churning out these emails/texts /letters until someone tells it to stop.

Be careful. They tried to slap a debt on me by sending it via email. They didn’t even have my name spelt right. When I asked them to prove I owed, they asked for contact details - which they clearly didn’t have.

I just refused for years to provide it. I deleted the email account eventually. Never heard from them again and nothing on my credit report.
