Do you have to be on UC (universal credit) to get a job centre appointment?

So I’ve been on benefits since I was 21 never worked due to disabilities, but I want to work. I went down the job centre this morning, since I was told last week someone would call on Monday September 4th, surprise surprise they didn’t.
Anyway I went down with me mum and spoke with this little jobsworth on the door. Mum explained that I needed to see someone because I’m looking for a job. He just said along with to G4S guys oh go on XYZ job sites. Me mum said I need to see someone because I’m disabled and need help looking for work, like work experience or something like that because I want to make sure coming off benefits is the right thing .
Told the guy I’m on PIP and ESA, he just said oh you’ll need to apply for UC before we can give you an appointment. In the end mum just said oh we’ll leave it, “might as well stay claiming benefits then”
So do I need to apply for UC or what only the pervious job centre worker a lady who we told the same story to as this guy invited us took me contact details and said the disability advisor would be in touch. I don’t fancy having to go through the whole rigmarole of applying for UC waiting for a decision then getting an appointment. So ultimately do I need to be a UC claimant or what?

There might be organisations in your area that provide job hunting support to people with disabilities, there are in my area. Look on google. I would say they’d be better than the job centre as well.1200 bonus saver

The job centre ceased to be a place to search for jobs since the early 2000s, it’s now a place to administer people on Universal Credit.1

every Jobcentre should have a member of staff that deals with disabilities and people on benefits trying to get into work. Try the citizens advise website and see if you can get an appointment there. Your local council may also have a team helping people back into work.
