in Cutting tax
Probably not the right board to put this on but wasn’t sure where it fitted.
It seems my son has inadvertently signed up to Tax Returned Ltd acting as an agent for him on his tax account. This was done through a Facebook link asking are you entitled to a tax refund. He was out of work and skint at the time - the rest is history along with an outstanding £300 bill reminder via text this week from this company.
I am not questioning the validity of their claim. While morally lacking it sadly looks a legitimate company and has led to a chat with my son about never sharing details again via a Facebook link amongst other things. He has no contract or anything from this company confirming the agreement that was entered into.
My more pressing question is how to remove this agency from his tax account. The HMRC are impossible to reach by telephone and I can’t explain what we want to discuss in a way the automated system understands. He is due a large period of sick leave in the next 6 months which will potentially mean another tax refund so anxious to resolve this as he doesn’t have much money right now.
Can anyone advise? Thanks

There could be two elements to this,
1. Removing them as his agent/accountant is straightforward, possibly a call at 8am sharp could achieve that.
2. Removing the authority for them to receive any tax refunds is harder. If he has signed a deed of assignment then that can only be removed with the agents permission. Which is unlikely to be forthcoming, especially if you/he mentions the possibility of a further refund.
HMRC have now stopped accepting deeds of assignment so a lot will depend on the timing.0 -
Thank you for your reply. He is unable to call himself as at work all day with no phone access so I will try and call myself to see if we can write to them removing them as his agent. He hasn’t physically signed anything. At most he will have put a tick in a box on a Facebook link and has never received any communication from them. I certainly won’t inform them about a future refund. We have no idea when he completed this “ enquiry” on Facebook but I think it would have been June time and he has heard nothing from them until recently. There is no tangible contract from them to see how this arrangement works.Looking on their website quickly he can write to them to cancel the agreement. I’d be tied into this agreement for 4 years otherwise? Apologies but I don’t understand what a deed of assignment is0

This might be worth a read.

Thank you. That looks very helpful although more than my brain can process at this time of night!I will take a read over the weekend and see what we need to do next. He certainly was not understanding of what he had unwittingly agreed to and it was after March 23 I believe. My difficulty will be making a call on his behalf with him around to consent to the call.0
