Gym membership help

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone could help me with this please.

In august of last year I took out a 12 month gym membership, at the time it was affordable for me.

Around Febuary/March of this year with the cost of living going up (petrol, food all the usual stuff) I couldn’t afford to pay it and let the over due payments build up (I know that this was a mistake) the gym offered to credit these payments and extended my contract.

While I’ve been able to pay some of these, it’s pretty obvious to me that I can’t afford to consistently pay and will end up in arrears again very soon.

I asked the gym if I could leave my contract but they said they’d only let me out if I can prove a change of circumstance such as medical or losing my job etc. they wouldn’t accept that everything is just more expensive now. I offered ti show them things such as my credit card bill and end of month bank statements but they said that wasn’t good enough.

if anyone has any advice on how I can get out of my contact it would be massively appreciated.

thanks

Gyms are notorious for holding members to contracts with very little room for negotiation.

There does not seem to be any good reason why the gym would allow the early end to the contract.
How many more months do you need to pay?
As a minimum, ensure you give the required notice to end the gym membership at the minimum number of months you need to pay and don't end up on a rolling agreement after that minimum term has ended.

You may find it worth while visiting the DfW (Debt-free Wannabee) section of the forum and preparing your SoA (Statement of Affairs). This is not only a tool for people with debt challenges, it is a tool for helping anyone with their budgeting.  You may find that simply preparing the SoA shows you some ideas to make the money go further.  If not, share your output and the people over in the DfW area will offer suggestions.
