Yes from taxable income, but you can earn about £17.5k without paying tax. I also have several tax free investments and savings. I'm not planning on leaving any money to anyone when I pop off.eastcorkram said:

This all seems a bit tit for tat.
The OP was questioning why they were no better off.
My wife was semi retired for several years and even when she was getting her state pension she was paying 40% tax.
