Luckily I've no money with them, but following an earlier theft of Nationwide customers' details when one of their employee's laptops was stolen from their home, I do think it's time these institutions got their security act together and stopped employees taking home laptops when such information is stored on them. Surely all this data should be stored on a central server, capable of being accessed remotely, but not permitted to be permanently held on laptops, but only on desktops which are not removed from the company's building? Or am I being naive about this?

In general I fully agree with you. But it is sometimes necessary to outsource data for eg a specialist printing run that requires equipment you don't have and can only be done on the specialist premises. If they don't have a high speed network connection .. you do have to transport it on portable media. But you pre-check the security of the data when at the specialist printers and you transport it using one of your own staff.

Under circumstances like that but where the 3rd party does have the appropriate data connections - you don't normally prejudice your in-house core data by giving out ad-hoc accesses. Transporting it 'should' be safer. But the plethora of losses suggests that data is now being extracted for the flimsiest of reasons - and being given the flimsiest of security care.

However, on the bright side ...... it keeps James happy.;)
