London Kings X to Leeds

Options
For 8th October i'm looking at a Grand Central train - 9.49am departure from Kings X to York.  It arrives in York at 11.40am
There is a connecting train departing York at 11.49am to go to Leeds.  However my concern is the 1st train could run late and i miss the 2nd train.  The next train from York departs at 11.16am.

I could book the 11.49am train with an advance single for £9.80, however if 1st train is late i will be quids out and have to buy an off peak single of c£18 for the 11.16am train.

What option is best?

    Kings X York 9.49 arrive 11.40
    York Leeds D 11.49

What relevance is the 11.16am York service?

Is this one booking, a split ticket or your own itinerary?

With an Advance ticket as long you have allowed the minimum connection you dont need to purchase an additional ticket if you train is running late , but would need to stay with same train company on connecting train.

The minimum connection time at York is 8 minutes. You can check your connection is valid by putting the journey in to National Rail Enquires Web Site.

Hi, im travelling from London to Leeds. Split ticketing is the cheapest way to get to Leeds.
I travel from London to York on the grand central train.  The trains from York to Leeds are run by Transpennine Express.

My point is if i miss the 11.49am from York to Leeds, then would my advanced fare ticket be valid for the next train that departs at 12.17?

  • With just a 9 minute interchange time at York (as against the official 9 minute minimum) I would say it would be clutching on straws to think your advanced ticket (from a different train operating company) would be valid on the later train even if both ran to time. You need to buy your advance ticket for the 1217 and accept you will have a longer wait at York.
(or of course just go direct KX to Leeds, which will be quicker though I accept a tad more expensive.)

If it is booked as a single trip using a split ticketing website if one leg is delayed you can get the next service to your destination, just ensure you have a copy of the trip details with you.  If you are concerned about connection time you should be able to add more time to connections as an option when selecting the route.

For info Northern, LNER and Crosscountry also provide York to Leeds services so plenty of options.
  • Just to check--is the York-Leeds leg also an Advance (nominated fixed train)?  If it isn't then likely your ticket would be valid for any York-Leeds train with the nominated operator.  How much is a non-advance ticket on York-Leeds (may need to buy the tickets separately to achieve the split with a non-restricted ticket for York-Leeds instead of using a website which books all the splits as one transaction)

Hi, i've already booked the London to York ticket as advanced single, depart 9.49 arrive 11.40. Grand Central train.

I'll play it safe and book the 12:17 transpennine train from York to Leeds. Gives me 37 mins in case the grand central train gets in late to York. However i have a long wait of 37 mins
