What steps are being taken by your wife to get to a better place as far as her mental health is concerned, as if I am reading your post's subtext correctly it sounds very much as though this is at the root of a lot of the problems?
Although I agree with others that taking on further debt on behalf of your wife isn't the way forwards, you can certainly take steps to ensure that there is a robust budget in place for the household, and any existing joint debt would of course form part of this.
the issue with "rescuing" someone from debt is that it means they don't have to go through the process of clearing it themselves - the problem just goes away, and so there is no incentive to stay debt free ion the future. Even if only subconsciously there is the background there that "debt doesn't matter as someone else pays it off" - and that is not a way to live that will lead to a happy outcome in almost any cases.
