Tube discussion/ticket validity Oyster/contactless

I have sometimes heard announcements on the tube where there is a significant delay/disruption that "your ticket will be valid on local buses or alternative routes".
I can see how this works for a single paper ticket, but clearly this does not work by default for oyster/contactless for bus alternative after a broken tube journey has started.
You will won't be allowed to board a bus without tapping, at which point you will be charged a bus fare.
Presumably you have to contact the contact centre to get a refund? Has anyone got any experience of doing that, is it straightforward or does it take a lot of explanation?

Announcements are stuck in the 1970s. The one on the Overground that says you must have a ticket or Oyster Card or else doesn't seem to take account of the contactless card used by many.0

It happened a few years ago to me. I actually used oyster back then (now use contactless) and got an email telling me to present my oyster card at an information desk or similar for a refund within a certain time frame.
The email arrived when I was back home. In west Yorkshire. So a little bit pointless0
