Backdating of Local Government pension after retiring on ill health grounds.

I was retired on ill health grounds at the beginning of the year, and as a result had to go through our employee healthcare unit (I worked for a council for many years) for a decision on whether I was eligible for my full pension. I have just learned that I have been awarded this, which is a huge relief as I have been living off disability benefits.
Does anyone know if the pension award will be backdated to the date when I was dismissed on the grounds of ill health, which was in January, or do I just get the pension starting from now? I know that for some people this decision making process can take over a year, so I’m grateful that it “only” took eight months, but I don’t know what the rules are in regard to backdating.

Can't answer your question but should there be an option to back date or not then do check that it won't adversely affect any benefits you have been getting. I know of someone who was on housing benefit which had to be paid back as he backdated the start of his state pension. wiped out any benefit in backdating.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. Thank you for this. Thankfully I don’t claim any benefits that will be affected by this but it’s good to know.0

I would suggest that your local LGPS admin team would be able to answer this if you contact them.

It depends on the terms of the award. If your original ill health dismissal has been changed to an ill health tier, then payments should be backdated. But if the terms have changed on review, then there is a possibility that they may not be.
It really is a question for your LGPS/HR/Occ Health, I'm afraid, as we can only guess. Good luck.1
