  • I am looking for a part time joba nd in the last month I have applied for 6 and interviewed for 3.
    As yet no job.
I interviewed today and the hours expected were days, evenings and weekends.
I can do days, and most weekends(Ie Sat or Sun, not both), but I cant work past 6 as I have 13 year old sat at home who I dont want to leave on his own all night.
Why does it not say this in the ad. I know I should have asked when phoned to set up interview, but why cant the actual shifts be part of the ad?

Since when have you needed to be so totally flexible in what hours you can work? What happened to school hour shifts?

Is it vague though? If you know the place is open into the evening why would you not expect that some of the hours would be in the evening?

As said if you're unsure ask up front.

Opening hours aren't really a good yardstick on its own, you need to also consider what the role is etc. An insurer offering emergency insurance is going to be open 24/7 but if you applied for a role in FP&A you'd not be expecting to be there at 7pm on a Sunday. There can be aspects of a role that mean hours aren't what you expected, a UK based IT BP to a division in the US is going to have evening work but the job ad wont necessarily either have advised either the hours nor the fact its the US you'd be aligned to.

Asking upfront is sensible, and generally works in what I do as you'll be speaking to an agent before the applications formally submitted anyway, but many volume roles are much more faceless... application via form, screening done without engagement and interview invite sent blindly.

I'm in a similar position. Before I apply I eail them to ask the approx hours if I can't find an e mail address I will try to ring. It alsoay be worth mentioning that your situation will change in a few years when your son is grown & you may be able to increase your hours? Good luck
  • Thanks for the replies. I interviewed for a position recently which I believed was days/weekends because thats what the ad said but at interview was told it also included 2 evenings, no room for negotiation even though I was perfect for the role according to the interviewer. So even when the and states the shifts/times etc, its not always right.
I am looking at retail as thats where all my experience is. Ive not worked since having the kids, my fault I suppose but we always coped on one salary. I just want a few hours to give us some wiggle room but dozens of applications done, 4 interviews and nothing.
I cant be the only one who cant be flexible all day every day.

It's really hard the part time job market so don't get yourself down. Retail is hard because they open such long hours they don't like to limit themselves I guess by giving someone school hours etc.
I have been applying and know with certainty if I wanted full time I would have a job already, but as it stands there are few part time jobs that are they right hours (some people listing part time at 34 hours 🙄), then the right days for me and then that I actually have all the skills for!
My son is disabled and I have no prospect of childcare so have no flexibility in terms of days.

I think I will find something, but like you it's not going to be easy. Congrats on getting interviews, keep your head up.
