I've been stung by the HMRC. My tax code has changed and I've been told I owe over 3k. I spoke to the HMRC and have been told the umbrella company I was with submitted some of the payslips I had 10 times, basically duplicated the payslips. I was wondering what's my best course of action?

If you ca provide duplicate payslips were submitted then there can surely be no reason why HMRC wouldn't alter your Tax Code accordingly. I've had reason to contact the Revenue in the past and they have always agree to change my Tax Code back. The other option if you do Self-Assessment is to wait until you submit this year's from April 6th onwards where you'll submit your taxable income for the year, they'll realise you've overpaid on tax and you'll get it back. Bit of a wait for that so I'd be on the blower to them pronto.

HMRC are the ones who told me that the Umbrella Company duplicated the payslips. They told me to go back and speak to the Umbrella Company to withdraw those payslips. I think if HMRC could correct it they would have done so whilst we were on the phone but they directed me to speak to company. If company refuse then I can only assume they are dodgy and I would have to report them, but I don’t know how to.

I take it you've spoken with the Umbrella Company and they've been obstructive?

I’ve spoken to them and they said they will get back to me with an update.

Sorry I’m not jumping the gun. I’m just investigating what my options are if I run into issues that’s all.

Update. I’ve just been on Twitter doing some investigation and have found out that the company is involved in tax avoidance. It was only added this week: https://twitter.com/hmrcgovuk/status/1684564303737757696?s=46&t=rrUa2dmCCBV9XUOviur7XA
