A dark brown eyeshadow will double up as eyeliner if you use a thin brush (and I was told is better for forming a solid line on the ahem contoured skin that comes with age). And a lipstick doubles up as blush if you put a little bit on your cheeks and rub it in. So I'd start with those, some concealer and maybe mascara. Then add foundation later if you decide you want it - but personally I think leave as much of your natural skin as you can - it's easy to keep going and end up looking a bit fake.
I use boots no 7 foundation if I use it - make sure to match it with the skin on your jawline. I haven't figured out a concealer that I really like, but I quite like putting it on in little triangles that go over the boundary of where you are trying to cover, then blending the edges in- if you just put it where you are trying to cover, it just makes that bit a different colour rather than hiding it.
You can ask at the makeup counters to try a specific thing eg their recommended mascara, you don't need to have the full face (though sometimes it's fun, just make sure you walk away not buying anything and give it some time before deciding to buy)
Have a think about what brushes to get - I have a thin angled one for applying eye shadow mascara, one that's about 2p in size at the end but flat for applying foundation in the way that they dust a crime scene and another one for dobbing concealer on. I don't know the names and tbh I think different people use different brushes/tools for different things. I've bought mine at different times so they are different makes and colours which makes it super easy to grab the right one.

So number 4 and number ten from here for concealer and foundation (I'm not recommending this brand, just so you can see what they look like - tbh, ones from the supermarket are probably fine)

And this is what I have for applying eyeliner (unless I use a pencil)

After an accident I couldn't wear make up around my eyes for years so never wore any make up. Deciding to "give it a go" on a whim I went into SpaceNK and had a make up session. There was no pressure to "buy" and she spent some time making up my eyes, she did one, I did the other. I ended up buying two eyeshadows because I simply loved the look and colour and it was fab. I learnt to do a natural look and also how to make it a bit "heavier" if I wanted a "more" look.
She also showed me how to use blusher and high lighter for my face and I simply said I would go back when I had the money for those although I was very careful to note the colours.
So worth it because it was "for me" rather than video and there was no heavy sell just a lovely free lesson.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!1 -
