How does a birthday holiday work?

Slightly off topic ... but
I've been really surprised to find that "birthday day off" seems to be known quite widely. In all my working life I have never come across the custom despite working in private, public and third sector organisations.0 -
I've spent 2 decades doing temping agency work so it wasn't relevant but previous to that I'd never come across it.General_Grant said:Slightly off topic ... but

I'd never heard of it before this thread either, which is why I have commented that is seems unnecessarily convulted to me, when you could just give everyone an additional day off to use when they like. I guess if you are used to it then it might not seem so odd? I wonder is it a private sector thing? I have always worked in public sector jobs which, to be fair, tend to be quite generous with holidays (less so with pay, one might argue..!)0

I agree with you. If you have to have your birthday off (unless it falls on a non working day) then how many of us want a random midweek day off, especially if you're not fond of your birthday month. My Mum's is early Jan, she's always said she'd prefer it to be in a warmer month. I've already got BH and an extended Xmas shutdown where I have to take hols, I'd prefer the birthday date not to be another controlled when I have it date.SadieO said:I'd never heard of it before this thread either, which is why I have commented that is seems unnecessarily convulted to me, when you could just give everyone an additional day off to use when they like.
