help with costs of My mother's funeral that passed away in January this year

I'm new to all this and was wondering if I can find help or suggest a way of getting financial help. My Mother passed away on the 19th of January 2023. It wasn't expected even though she was 93 yo. Her lungs collapsed and she passed away. I found myself having to organize the funeral arrangements and all. She was living abroad in Rome, Italy precisely. I found myself having to pay the amount of 10000 euros which I didn't have and had to ask for a loan. Is there any way I can claim help if not all some money back? She wasn't a British Citizen.

Did she have a will and did she have any assets at all? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

The members of this forum are unlikely to have expertise in the way things work in Italy. In the UK, the funeral cost would be met from assets in the deceased estate. If there are insufficient assets to cover the cost, families are not obliged to cover the costs although many will feel an emotional pressure to do so. Did you mum have any money or assets? (What was the EUR 10K cost for?)1

You need to know what the Italian law is regarding paying for funerals.
As MEM said what exactly was the breakdown of the cost?If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
Did she live in Italy? Was the funeral in Italy or was there a repatriation?0

If the entire funeral took place in Italy then there wouldn't be any state help available from the DSS, if there was a funeral here and OP lives here then there may be. But, if help is available, it would be nothing like the amount they have paid out.2 -

If someone dies in the UK and has no money then the council arrange and pay for a simple funeral - the family are not expected to pay for it - but the amounts would also be nothing like 10000 euros0 -
A quick Google on Italian funeral costs suggest 10,000 euros in the average price of a funeral over there.
I think the average cost of a paupers funeral in the UK funded by the local council is a little under 2k.
Unless you can claim anything from her estate, then the buck stops with you I`m afraid to say.
