Underpaid tax...

in Cutting tax
Hi, it appears that for the last financial year I underpaid tax and now have received a payment request. I have hunted high and low and cannot find an answer to what I think is a relatively easy question. How long do I have to pay the owed tax before the tax office add interest? They've taken 4 months to tell me I had underpaid, so can I wait a couple of months before I pay them? Will I get a reminder to pay or just an increased amount to pay! Any guidance gratefully accepted.

Is this tax owed under Simple Assessment or Self Assessment?0

What event caused this extra tax to be due ?
Did you file a Self Assessment tax form ?
If so, your online Government Gateway account will show when the tax is due.

Thanks for the response. It's tax due on the state pension. I logged on to the gateway the same day I got the notification, 14 July ,and the message was "due by 14 July" !

If it is for 2022-23 then the earliest you should have to pay it by is 31 January 2024.0 -

LITRG have some useful info here.
https://www.litrg.org.uk/tax-guides/tax-basics/what-simple-assessment
And the official info here,
https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/paye-manual/paye96301
Bit more complicated for earlier tax years but for the last one that has ended you shouldn't need to pay until 31 January 2024.1
