Overpayments when on standard variable mortgage

I'm currently on a fixed rate and overpay by 10% a year
This is the maximum I am allowed to overpay without receiving a penalty.
Does this only apply when I am in a fixed term contract and once contract ends I can make a lump sum payment, or will I only ever be able to overpay by 10% a year?
