XBox 360 repair (and power cable)

I've been reading these forums for a while now, and very useful they've been indeed. However, I now find myself in need of assistance from the wonderful MSE community.

I've been given a faulty Xbox (three red lights fault) as a gift from a friend, and I was wondering if anybody knew the best/cheapest way to get it repaired?

I believe it has previously been opened, so the warranty has been voided.

Also, it has no cables, it's just the box. I'm now having a problem finding a power supply (the big brick bit) for it. The only place I've found one on the web so far has been ebay from Hong Kong sellers. I've issues with ebayers in Hong Kong before, so I'd rather not go down this route.

HELP!

  • Microsoft will repair any xbox 360 for £65 I think it is. even those that have been opened you bought it 2nd hand didnt you??? how were you to know it had been opened?

The AV cables can be bought from game. The power adaptor is the tough one, it will involve a freind phoneing microsoft and telling them that theirs has failed microsoft will send a replacement.

Just send it in to Microsoft.

They will repair it under the 3 year RROD warranty and won't argue because it's a RROD repair.

I agree with the last poster about the PSU as well :D

  • My sons has just been fixed free of charge by Microsoft even though it was out of guarantee. My son contacted them and it was collected by UPS and delivered a few days later, all working.Hope it will be the same for you, may be a bit tricky if it has beeen opened though they may someone has tampered with it. Good luck anyway.

  • My 360 has failed with the three red lights. I have tried to book it in via the Microsoft website for repair but it says that it is out of warranty. I bought it in November 2005 - one of the first ones so a miracle it has lasted this long.

Did your son do it on the phone or through the website?

You'll definitely have to call them. This happened with my xbox too, which was also a 2005 model. The RROD is a specific fault for which Microsoft have extended the warranty to a full three years.

    This is what happens:

You call, you get through to speak to someone, they'll ask you to explain the fault and ask for the serial number. Their questions are designed for people that don't know much about their xboxes, so they'll ask you to do some tests on your xbox while you're on the phone. Don't worry - it's all easy stuff! Just make sure you've taken a note of the serial number and you're on a phone that will allow you to access the box.

That will all go very smoothly, then you'll be given a packing slip to send the box away. UPS will come and pick it up, and then they'll return it (or someone else's refurbished model) to you within 20 working days.

Microsoft have started to contact people who are sending 3RL 360's back if they have been opened or if they have been banned from live due to running an altered firmware on their DVD drive. The reason it will have been opened is to connect the drive to a PC and flash the drive with an alternative firmware allowing the play of backups. Microsoft will repair as I said but will want £65 to do it. even with thr 3RL error becasue it has been modified they treat it as out of warrenty or voided warrenty.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll be sending it off to Microsoft then. £65 for a working 360 is still quite a bargain (my friend gave it to me, I didn't buy it!)

Now I just need to sort out finding a power brick.
  • I sent mine off and got it back 22 days later, repaired and with a month's free Xbox Live Gold Membership.
