Flaky Mascara

Options
I've tried all sorts of mascara & no matter what type I always end up with black bits under my eyes. Is there any way of avoiding this? Thanks:cool:
nothing to see here, move along...

  • It's most likely the fibres inorporated in the mascara that are meant to lengthen your eyelashes that's ending up under your eyes. Maybe you're putting too much on? I don't know. I rub my eyes sometimes and end up with a few little bits, but it's not too bad.

On How to look good naked they recommended one of the Rimmel mascaras (I think) maybe you could try that instead.

    1. Make sure your face, including your eyelashes, is spotlessly clean before you apply make-up.

    2. Mascara is the last thing you put on your face. Apply foundation, eye shadow, liner, set with powder. Curl your lashes, then apply mascara. If you put mascara on and then curl, you will both damage the mascara and your eyelashes (as the mascara hardens it could make your lashes crack in the curler).

    3. Wait until the first layer is almost dry, then just touch up the corners if needed.

    4. To get the best out of your brush, take the wand bit out of the bottle, leaving the brush bit inside. Now press the wand down at a slight angle so that when you take the whole thing out, the brush is at an angle to the wand. This angle means you can get really under the lashes effectively.

    5. Don't pump the brush in and out of the bottle. That just introduces air into the mascara.

    6. Keep your make-up in the fridge, especially the mascara. This will prolong its life and help prevent bacterial growth.

    7. I personally like the L'Oreal Professional waterproof range. Cheap and nasties do flake whatever you do.

    Hope any of this helps.

I agree with this, but do be careful what you're cleansing the eye area with. If you use anything containing oil, it creates a barrier meaning the mascara won't cling to the lashes for very long. Check the ingredients list to your cleanser! Most do contain oil, unless they specify otherwise, e.g. those for oily/combi skin.

If prevention doesn't work for you, try the solution. Simply use a cotton bud dipped in a tiny amount of Nivea (or Astral) cream and gently wipe the mascara bits/smudges away.
