Pay rise

Options
Hi
I work for a gp and we have had an email to say we are getting a pay rise of on average 2.1% so when getting my letter to advise of my new hourly wage it's worked out as 1.9% so I have currently arranged a meeting to discuss but when talking to other members of staff it seems other have been on different hourly rates so there increase differs to mine, I'm thinking what they are trying to do it's get everyone on the same wage but no discussion has been made prior to this and  my role differs in the practice to other people so my question is 1. Should a meeting had been set up prior to advise why the average is different for different people and the reason for this and 2. Can they do this,?  some get 2.1% some get 1.9% my colleague only got 0.9% but again our job differ, it just doesn't seem fair to me
Thanks

    1. Should a meeting had been set up prior to advise why the average is different for different people and the reason for this and
They do not have to have a meeting, they do not need to explain, although it would have been advisable for them to have done so.
    2. Can they do this,?  some get 2.1% some get 1.9%
    Yes.
my colleague only got 0.9% but again our job differ, it just doesn't seem fair to me
Just because jobs differ it does not automatically mean that one should be paid more than the other. Large organisations often have pay grades where multiple vastly different jobs all slot into the same pay grades.

    Fairness is subjective.
  • Thanks for replying  it's just disappointing that I've had a lower pay rise than others, without a discussion, I think it's time to move on

The letter has said 'average' which means some will get more and some less.  If any staff are on minimum wage they will have received far more than 2%, therefore others will receive less.  The employer is under no obligation to discuss payrises given to other staff with anybody other than that person.  In fact I would be surprised if they are allowed to do so.

People doing different jobs often get different rates of pay, so not sure what 'isn't fair' about that. If an employer is trying to iron out the differences, as you say, then it's inevitable that the %age increase will vary.
