HMRC Refund

Options
Hi

i’ve received a letter from Hmrc saying I’ve paid two much tax and they will be sending a cheque to MAKING TAX RETURNS SIMPLE LIMITED for the amount shown which was £403.58. I subsequently received a cheque from MAKING TAX RETURNS SIMPLE for £353.58.

has this happened to anyone else? I don’t understand why Hmrc didn’t just refund me directly for the full amount.

Thank for any advice

  • Because that company will have sent HMRC a signed authority to receive any tax refund.

If you didn't sign any such authority then you could ask HMRC for a copy and report it as fraud.  But I suspect that would be a waste of time.
  • I would also, if the refund was unexpected, looking for a breakdown of the the calculation giving rise to the refund. If you didn’t make a claim …………..

Did you previously reply to an advert by that company that they can get a tax refund for you?

  • I previously signed up with a company to track down PPI for me, which they did but it was not this company. I have not signed anything with this company.

Could the original company be connected to the  new one, which was only incorporated in March 2023?

You need to contact HMRC to ask what authority they hold to repay them  and what claim has been submitted to  make the refund due?

Best time to phine is as soon as lines open.

Sort of happened with me - HMRC tax refund letter the other week said they had also sent a letter to some tax services company which was connected to a PPI claim company I used years ago.

Luckily for me HMRC paid me directly by BACS so the scummy tax services company will just be getting a useless letter with no monies forthcoming.

That's the problem with these refund companies, which HMRC is trying to crack down on. Often they make you sign a Deed of Assignment, rather than a simple authority form which can be effective for past and future years too.
Both parties need to agree to revoke the Deed so I would write to the company to request this.

I tried emailing the company on mine and I'm getting no replies. Their website address just goes to a server default page and the registered address on companies house is just some house down a cul-de-sac in Cheshire.

I may have to write a letter. Or turn up on the door step.
  • contact the company, if they have received any money and did no work they should send you the payment over. then ask them to make sure no deed of assignment is in place for future years. If you do not want them to act on your behalf make sure they are removed as your registered agent.

HMRC are closing the self assessment portal in 2026 so you will have to use 3rd party software to submit, This is to prevent fraudulent claims. There is a app called pie.tax which i have just downloaded and its very easy to use and stores everything for your self assessment, i would highly recommend, i found it much easier and more advanced than quick books.

    It is not thar simple.

A deed os assignement is a lasting authority and you need the agreement of the company to rescind it.

It  there is a deed assigment in place that authorises HMRC to pay ALL repayment sto theat company. regardless of whether they do work on the claim or not.

However, since the OP has not logged on since June I doubt he will read this.
