Price of tinned tomatoes

I'm struggling with the price rises in tinned tomatoes. It used to be 28p for a 400g can of basic own brand. I went in recently to Aldi and Sainsbury's - and both have now jumped to 35p a can. And I even saw one can where the tomatoes were pre-chopped and the price was 37p! I know everything is increasing in price but it just seems like a huge price increase for a staple food (I do a lot of batch cooking to keep my food budget low and often use tinned tomatoes). Is anyone else struggling with this? Are there places where tinned tomatoes haven't jumped as high in price? My rent has jumped to 52% of my income, I'm not eligible for any benefits until I practically exhaust my savings, and I work f/t - so controlling my food budget is one area I can work on. I try to avoid the cheese counter as much as possible because it's become so expensive but the rising price of tinned tomatoes really hit home at the weekend when I saw the price jump (to be fair I hadn't bought any in a while because I've tended to stock up when I can so the price increase hit home more). Thoughts and any cheap tomato substitutions in recipes appreciated!

  • Depending on how you use them can you replace them with Passata? Farmfoods have it at 4 cartons for £1 at the moment.

I'm afraid that's the best price at the moment  :( but still good value ... other staples have gone up more  :'(. I get a Sainsbury's Nectar points offer every couple of weeks on Hubbards chopped tomatoes, which helps.

I understand and empathize both with the cost of living and tomatoes, an essential for my goulashes and curries, there is no substitute!

Sainsbobs are currently selling 390gm cartons of chopped tomatoes with either chilli or basil and oregano for 20p, reduced from 60p.

When I’m in a supermarket I check out their bashed tin section and pick up tinned tomatoes there.  I can get them at half the normal price.

I know that % wise it's a big increase 25% - but it's still 7p. If you eat a tin a day that's really only £2.10 difference a month (sure altogether with other price increase it adds up).

You can stock up on these:
    https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-chopped-tomatoes-with-basil---oregano-390g

They're 20p per pack although BB date on my Chili ones (can't really taste it) is Aug 2023.
Sadly, a lot of people did so, and they hardly ever available at my local.

These two (chilli, basil & oregano) went back to 60p on Wednesday (19th July).

Although the majority of the BBs were/are end Aug 23, a couple of cases showed end Aug 24.

Thank you @Pollie, I stocked up on quite a few and have used both, they are excellent.

I just dug out an old receipt from Tesco dated July 2009
    Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes 35p
    Tesco Value Plum Tomatoes 33p

So in 14 years the price has remained the same (still 35p in Tesco) for chopped tomatoes.

Do you really think you can return tinned tomatoes after 14 years?  :p
