Do I pay tax for 22/23 if I've not earned over threshold?

Options
I started in Dec(self employed) but up to April(the end of tax year) I didn't earn over the minimum allowance or around £12750.

Did I therefore have to file a tax return for the year 22/23.

You will need to file a tax return - even if there is no tax pay. Keep in mind that there may be National Insurance to pay (as the threshold is lower), even if no income tax.

Hi, if you keep a check on your personal HMRC online file, they will notify you whether or not you need to submit a return. As you log in, there's a box containing a message that says "If you’re not sure whether to complete a tax return, you can check if you need to file." And you can just click on the required links, it's very easy. On mine for this year (I'm self employed but as yet haven't earned enough to pay tax) it says 'you have no tax to pay'.

And then when I clicked on 'you can check if you need to file' - there were a few questions to answer and the outcome for me is that I don't need to file.

If you haven't already, do sign up to the government online services - link below.

Saves having to phone or write, you get all the information in one place (both personal and business accounts) and you can also ask questions on there and they do reply.

    Hope that's helpful.
