Abbey are charging interest on my interest free overdraft

It strarted last month and now they are going to charge again at the end of this month. It's costing a fortune in phone calls trying to sort it out as no-one seems to know why. One snotty woman told me I'd gone over my limit, when I went through my transactions to prove I hadn't she told me it wouldn't show up on a statement.
It's so annoying as now I have to budget for fees I don't owe.Worse still is when I phone I get Indian call centers who don't understand the problem and refuse to pass me through to a uk call centre. It can take several phonecalls to get through to someone who even has a clue.

  • I don't understand why it wouldn't show up on your statements?

Maybe you should visit a branch and try and sort it face to face with a real human being?

It's possible that you may have withdrawn cash or spent money before a payment into your account has cleared such as a cheque.
Or, if you've paid cash into your account on the same day as a DD or SO has come out, then technically, you've been overdrawn from midnight until you've paid in your cash. Neither of these transactions would show up on your statement as overdrawn, but the funds would not have been available.
    I hope this makes sense!

Hm sounds to me like another case of the banks fleecing tactics!!! I would definitely go into a branch and sort this out face to face as In Debt suggests!

  • when i need to speak to my bank and want to speak to a uk call centre i always press the option for making a complaint as these are generally routed to the uk, you may get more joy doing this

Abbey charge a month in arrears. So, it would be the month before that they're charging you for, not the current month.

I would try calling your phone banking line and pressing the number for complaints, as suggested above, and going into a branch tomorrow if you don't get any joy...best of luck, it's awful when you think you're on track and then something like this happens, isn't it?
