HSBC/RED Go away!

Hi all,
Hope this is in the correct forum, apologies if not...
About six years ago I closed my current account with HSBC and after I closed the account they hit me with some charges. I can't exactly remember what for, all I remember is they were unreasonable and I refused to pay them at the time.
These charges then escalated to almost £500 and HSBC have been chasing me through debt collection agencies ever since (namley RED). For the first couple of years I said I'm not paying, told them to send it to the county court and I'll happily let them decide if I should pay. But still they kept phoning and sending letters, about 6 months ago I got so sick of it I said I'll pay £200 to settle and for you to leave me alone, but this wasn't good enough. I've reitterated what I've told them on dozens of occasions, telling them to send the matter to the county court and nothing ever happens. I just keep getting "final" letters before litigation etc etc
It really is the principle of it now, if I genuinely thought I owed this money (which originally was about £60) then I would pay it, but I don't!
What can I do to get rid of these monkeys! They're really starting to harass me and I'm sick of it, they've stepped up the pace recently with the phone calls and it's just got beyond annoying.
Has anyone got any suggestions of how I can get a fair resolution to this?
Thanks in advance
Tom

This is a tough one-under the terms and conditions of the account, you probably did owe them the money they charged you origignally. I would advise contacting the CAB for advice and seeing what they suggest.
Not generally a good idea to ignore any demands for payment, however unjust you may think it is, as it can mean you then become liable for extra charges, interest etc. I hope you get it resolved soon.0
