Do you worry about getting sacked

Do you worry about being sacked? I mean I live pay check to pay check, if I lost my job I would become homeless.

Many people do live pay check to pay check. The good news is that these particular forums are full of Money Saving Experts who can help you become more financially independent. Provided you ask the right question on the right board of course.

As for the question, I sometimes think about what I would do if I lost my job. I wouldn’t say I worry too much about it. I don’t worry about being sacked, I’d have to do something pretty stupid to get sacked. Redundancy on the other hand can happen to anyone.

No, because we have a robust disciplinary procedure and policy. The rules are really clear.

I don't intend to give cause to sack me so I'm not worried.

For most no income would mean having to give up their home and/or reassess their circumstances

Could you not do extra hours or a part time second job just until you get some money behind you?

    No.

I've never been worried or even thought about getting sacked. Losing my job through other means such as lack of business etc and so on, but fortunately in my trade I could lose my job today and be in a similar role by Friday.

A lot of people live pay day to pay day, its becoming increasingly harder to put money aside etc, a lot more people taking up second jobs or trying to work as much overtime as they can.
  • I've only recently been able to start saving, after living mainly payday to payday for years. In a single-income household, it can be very stressful. I've been 'let go' from a couple of jobs in the past. Not for doing anything wrong - I just hadn't been there long enough to have redundancy rights etc. They both gave me a bit of notice thankfully - six weeks notice for one role and 4-weeks garden leave for another, which they legally didn't have to do but was very welcome. Fortunately something else came up pretty quickly both times.

My current objective is to have 12-months worth of bills/living costs saved in an emergency fund. I'm now self-employed so this is more important than ever. It'll be a while before I get there as it's much harder to save now than it was a year ago, but I need that peace of mind so I've cut back on what I can and am doing as many hours as I can do and retain my sanity.

I've virtually no chance of getting the sack but I do worry about becoming ill. I got divorced 4 years ago aged 57 and have a mortgage until I'm 70 although I'll pay it off when I get a pension lump sum at 65 but until then it's what if

Taking out the appropriate insurance (either salary replacment [aka Permanent Health Insurance] and/or critical illness) might be worth investigating, depending on what sick pay your company offers. Checking that is the starting point.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I looked into insurance a couple of years ago but the costs are to high for me and as I live on my own with all the bills to pay I don't have much spare
My company pay full sick pay for 6 months and half pay for 6 months so I'm ok for a year, I just hope I don't become ill

Thankfully I'm now retired, but I certainly never worried on a day to day basis about losing my job.  It's pointless doing so as it's mainly outside your control.  You do need to do what you can to try to build up some savings to help protect against unknowns in the future. I appreciate that is very difficult for many people.
