Were politicians pushing for Diesel cars? That's often claimed but without any specific backup. I don't think there's ever been any tax or other incentive.

There was an article in the Independent back in 2015 about the promotion of diesel by government tax incentives despite public health problems related to it having been known for 20 years.

I think the politicians saw a win on Co2 (and reduced fuel costs) and so wanted to believe the hype re how much more healthy modern diesel engines had become and of course the manufacturers also wanted to perpetrate the same myth (VW being the most visibly caught out).
    I think....

I drove a Peugeot 205 "EcoDiesel" for about a decade from the mid 80s to the mid 90s.

The "tax incentive" metioned their was in fact the change to basing VED on CO2 emmissions, not actually an incentive for Diesel. So more fairly it should be said that they failed to put in place any VED penalty for Diesel. For company cars the rate for Diesel was in fact higher, initially indirectly based on engine size, then a 3% uplift when that changed to CO2 as well.

I think part of this hindsight and spin is people wanting to blame the government for their own choices, part jumping on the bandwagon now particulates have more publicity.

I use a 5kw multifuel stove, latest Defra standard for efficiency and emissions.
Key points as already mentioned are to use good quality fuels, all my wood is sourced for free but seasoned for at least 2 years to ensure it's properly dry.

Install price was around 2k and it's saved me 1,000 litres of oil so far per year.

I haven't done any internal room testing of emissions but in have read the health  concerns in various reports.

Most of my part of the village is on some sort of wood burner/open fire set up as well as oil boilers and you do notice the smell early evening in Autumn/Winter when everyone lights up.
