I currently work 37.5 hours a week and have been offered a 16 hours weekend work by a different employer is this ok because of the 48 hours a week law

You can opt out of the 48 hour week maximum.

At the last place I worked it was necessary to get permission before taking on a 2nd job. One person was refused permission because the 2nd job would require late working (beyond midnight) on the Sunday night. Our employer felt that lack of sleep could affect the performance of the employee.
