How on earth do you get anywhere with the HMRC phone lines, when you wait 30 minutes to get through and they cut you off? I suppose I could post my request for an 18 digit code to pay some money, but then I could be past state pension age by the time I get it (sorry that's sarcasm). Is there any quick way to get the 18 digit code starting with a 60??

Retired66, this isn't any help but do you really think there is a quicker method apart from phone and post? There isn't any secret or special manner of contact other than official methods.
  A search of this forum and elsewhere online, will provide you with information  that many people are in the same situation.
   Some suggest to call immediately  at opening hours, but they are often  just as busy then , as lots of people do the same!
   Patience is a virtue, albeit trying.

You don't need an 18 digit code.

You can just follow the guidance on gov.uk if you're happy paying by cheque.  And are 100% certain paying the year(s) in question will add what you expect to your State Pension.
