But I agree, and to my mind it would have constituted good debt advice from both 'professional' organisations, that your father should ask Sainsburys to write these off or at least to agree not to pursue these debts

Agree Sainsburys should at least freeze the Loan and then at least they will be able to claim eventually from your fathers estate.
