...will I have to tell the Tax Office, or will they know automatically?
Also, will I pay a different rate of tax to what I pay now?

HMRC do get to know automatically so contact the Tax Office and National Insurance Office and tell them.
You pay the same tax when your married, married persons tax allowances are only for people born in about 1930's/40's AFAIKI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
They only know if you tell them.
It's the same as when you move house or if you have a child and want tax credits.
As far as your tax code is concerned there is no difference unless 1 of you was born sometime in the 1930's (not sure of exact year) when you might be entitled to married couples allowance. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi all you young things
Married people's tax allowance (was originally intended for married men who had a 'wife to support'!!!) now only applies if one of the couple was born before April 1935.
We just squeezed into this when we got married in 2002, as B was born in December 1934. We split the allowance between us and it's applied to our individual pensions and annuities. So you would have to be 70 or more to get it now.
