Is a court payment taxable? Rent repayment order

My housemates and I took our unlicensed landlord to tribunal for fire safety issues, not protecting the deposit, mould. The process is called a Rent Repayment Order and we expect to be awarded a substantial portion of a year of rent. Does this count as taxable income?
We'd already paid PAYE taxes on that income when we earned it before paying it as rent. If it counts as our own money being returned, we'd expect not to be taxed. However, most advice online seems is more generally about compensation awards being taxable income. How should this be treated for tax?
And is the tax treatment different if we settle out of court?
