Confusing guide to be honest.... there seems no mention of those getting Carer element of Universal Credit which (when the systems actually get fixed) I presume ensures class 3 NI credits anyway.

Agreed, it should have mentioned carers element. To claim carers element you need to be claiming UC and yes you'll receive class 3 NI credits when claiming UC. Not everyone claiming UC is having problems with NI credits, i checked my daughters and she's had no problems since she claimed UC. However, if someone is claiming the LCWRA element for theirself, they can't also claim carers element at the same time.

Can't say i agree with the advice in the guide to ring carers allowance for advice though. They're not benefits advisors and no one should ring a call centre for such advice.
  • Couldn’t see any financial support for carer’s who are over retirement age. Can’t be the only person in this situation.

There is only really Pension Credit - being a carer adds a premium so increases the financial help available (and increases the threshold at which someone is still eligible for some PC).
  • I agree, the article should really include info on the interaction between pensions and carers allowance. Vast numbers of carers are over retirement age and people are often very surprised when they can't get carers allowance because of recieving a pension.
