I am puzzled as to why this is being described as an insurance policy. What is the hazard that you are insuring against and how is that linked to ID checks? Does someone receive a pay out if the ID checks fail?

The ID checks concerned are the same as when you open a bank account, can you imagine if banks started asking new customers to pay £75 for their ID to be checked?

It is an insurance policy.  It is Homebuyer Protection Insurance Policy. It is a ruse by  the EA to sell you this policy because one would assume they are getting both commission on the policy and when the insurance company phone you under the guise of ID checking you they try to bully you into using their conveyances, mortgage brokers, , mortgage companies etc. at inflated prices again giving commission to the EA. I would imagine that meanwhile the EA have asked already for your driving license and utility bill.😡
