Win a Bundle of DenTek Products
Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with dental hygiene company, DenTek, to give two lucky readers the chance to win a 6-month supply of their eco-friendly interdental products – both good for you and good for the planet.
A thorough oral hygiene routine has far reaching benefits beyond a healthy smile – from saving on avoidable and expensive dental treatment to potentially warding off dementia – so now has never been a better time to overhaul the way you care for your teeth.
Keeping Dementia at Bay With Interdental Care
A smile is important. It can boost the immune system, improve self-esteem, reduce stress and can even play at part in warding off dementia. It all comes down to good oral hygiene which can prolong healthy teeth and gums. A nice smile requires some effort but it’s effort that pays off in the long run and cleaning between the teeth is key.
A recent study found that older adults with signs of gum disease and mouth infections are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, the most common cause of dementia. The bacteria from gum disease and infections in the mouth can travel through the bloodstream to the brain, negatively impacting its health. The better the brain ages, the better it can ward off dementia.
Dental hygienist Hannah Ripley also from Zandielle Dental Clinic recommends the “Inside, Outside, Upside, Done!” approach. “This involves cleaning between the teeth first, followed by the outside (brushing your teeth) and the upside (tongue) but not rinsing. DenTek’s eco-friendly range of interdental cleaners are great for making sure every inch of tooth is reached,” she says.
A toothbrush alone cleans just 60% of the tooth but only 31% of us clean between the teeth on a regular basis. To hit the other 40% that the toothbrush can’t reach, oral hygiene products such as DenTek’s floss picks and interdental brushes are a must.
Although brushing your teeth may seem like a simple task, it’s easy to clean on “auto pilot” without ensuring teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly. An electric toothbrush is well worth investing in if possible. They are more effective at removing plaque and bacteria from teeth and the built-in timers help you brush for the recommended time of 2 minutes.
The tongue harbours approximately 50% of the bacteria in your mouth which can cause cavities and gum disease. The bottom line is that if you’re not cleaning your tongue, you’re allowing bacteria to have a home in your mouth so the cleaner you keep your tongue the better!
Simply use your toothbrush or a tongue cleaner (like DenTek’s Orabrush Tongue Cleaner) to brush the tongue surface for 15-30 seconds after brushing your teeth.
“It really pays to invest in the health of your teeth with a proper oral care routine,” says Jennifer Hudson, Senior Brand Manager at DenTek. “Most people know to brush their teeth but too few include interdental and tongue cleaning. By adding these important areas to your oral hygiene routine, the benefits can reach far beyond just the health of your teeth.”
So, brush up your oral routine and face 2023 and the years ahead with your healthiest smile yet!
