Phone call triggers

Hi,
this afternoon I have had three phone calls offering me there services and the use of an IVA to clear any debt I have. I have never had these type of calls before and I am wondering what could cause them. I had a credit card debt which had been passed on to a credit collection company but I cleared this debt in full a couple of weeks ago. The only other debt I have is a personal loan and I am up to date with repayments and have no problems there, I am just wondering where these companies get there info or what triggers them to call,
thanks

  • I don't know - but we are being inundated with international calls at the moment asking about debts. We are ex-directory so I have no idea where they are getting our number from. We get called all times of the day, past 9pm. Most of the time I ignore them, but sometimes we answer and there is no one there.

  • I'm not certain to be homest
But i have had the same calls and everytime that i tell them that i am fine i've amicably got a plan in place with my creditors that i did with the help of the cab and i stick to that and i dont need any help thank you i'm doing it on my own

They got right angry with me and i mean seriously shouting at me down the phone saying they could help and why wouldnt i just listen it was horrible so i put the phone down and now do everytime they call

I heard once that some companys call alot of people at the same time and as soon as the company gets through to someone it stops calling but if you happen to pick up the phone and the call has already gone through to someone else then all you get is silence
    Its odd
I get calls where its international i answer and it plays hold music
I always put these calls down immeadiately
  • I'm ex-directory and after getting 2 or 3 every day when my debts were at their worst I registered with the TPS service and over time they died down to virtually nothing.

I had a bit of a spate of them last week but they seem to have stopped again.

Their computers dial the phone numbers and if it is silent, it means their computer has connected you, but there is no operator to free at the other end.

  • I have BT Privacy which is supposed to sign you up to the telephone preference service .... but obviously it doesn't work :(

My husband answers and goes 'hellloooooooooooooooo' down the phone and puts it down.

not sure what's caused your calls but i must have done something recently because in the last week i've had 6 emails from 3 banks asking me to log on and update my details and i don't bank with any of them. me thinks someone's phishing and it's probably from one of the places i've been to via greasypalm.
  • Well we had another call earlier ... hubby said 'I told you when you phoned yesterday to stop calling .... can you PLEASE STOP RINGING US' and they said 'Oh, ok Sir, we will do that for you'

    Why am i not convinced?

Register your number with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and within 28 days (usually less) you should find the marketing calls greatly reduced. I registered last year after receiving a spate of unwanted marketing calls for weeks that literally drove me barmy, and within two weeks, they had dried up to almost nothing. I registered my ex-mum-in-law last week after visiting her and listening to her dealing with no less than three marketing calls in one afternoon. She was only too happy to have me register her!

The website's here: Telephone Preference Service

If you're getting those silent calls that are computer-dialed, then this page on the TPS site gives a number you can call to have them stopped and explains a little bit more about them.

I made the mistake of picking up the phone to have an Asian chap ask for my wife.I said she was unavailable,he then asked for me,the husband.Again I said that he was away and that I was his brother. The cheeky rascal then said``It has come to my intention that Mrs.
has unsecured debt that she is struggling with! The flaming nerve of them.As our finances are joint that simply was not the case.I think they are IVA companies just hoping that they may get some business!
