Decided to ‘do our bit’ and bought a Tesco own brand packet of kitchen roll with the smaller cardboard insert, supposedly saving % of manufacturing costs and paper. Great . . . . except the tube is too small for the holder. So I suppose any benefit of buying a smaller tube is spent on purchasing a smaller compatible holder 😄 Go figure that one

You buy cheap you buy twice. The amount of times I've been caught out too trying to do the right thing.0

There's loads of different designs for kitchen roll holders - I specifically chose one with a tiny 5mm post and a large base as there's all sorts of different rolls to consider now. Same for loo rolls, some designs can't cope with the double rolls or the smaller cores. Not Tesco's fault, but I can see it being annoying if you've been using the same holder for years without worrying about compatibility. There's still plenty of 'standard' options if you can live with having a kitchen roll unheld on your counter or in a drawer til it's used.
