Securing 2nd job difficulties

Options
Hi,

I've applied for multiple evening/weekend jobs but I'm just not getting anywhere.  I'm 51 and a Medical Secretary.  I'm not sure if it's because of my age or because I already have a full time job and they want flexibility.  I rarely even have a response.

Overtime has been stopped at work.

Many employers think if they get someone in part-time, that person can then help cover when someone else goes on holiday/off sick so the fact that you work full time already puts you straight into the no pile.  Flexibility only works one-way in their mind.   It sucks that you don't even get a response but its just how it is these days apparently.

Just keep plugging away at it but try not to build your hopes up too much whenever you make an application - just send it in and forget about it unless you hear back, don't think "if I get this job I'd be able to do this, that, the other etc."

Alternatively, why not consider changing your main job?  Could you earn more working for someone else, doing a different role elsewhere?  You will have a whole host of skills that could be used in many roles.   I'm 54 and changed careers just over 2 years ago so it can be done and your age doesn't have to be a negative - you've possibly got 30 years of experience/work wisdom that you can apply to any future job.

I changed careers at 58 and it was the best career change ever, thoroughly enjoyed it.  But I can understand why you might not want to give up your FT role, as I imagine it is for the NHS, and I believe the pension is worth hanging on for.

Not sure how much you want to make from an "extra" job, but I started doing online surveys and studies back in September and am regularly making £150 a month from very little effort. Might be worth looking at.

    Thanks for your responses.

I do work for the NHS, yes.  I love it too.  I get to learn every day, help people, and the doctors I work for I get on well with.I

I do surveys for YouGov, but they're monthly atm.  £150 a month is a lot!  That would definitely help.

Try signing up to Prolific, they are by far the best payer of online studies. I believe there is currently a waiting list for some demographics, but definitely worth it.  The other ones I find good are YLive, OnePoll and Qmee.  All these together do add up well.
