Its a measure of risk relative to the FTSE 100 which is always a score of 100. So a score of 10 is much lower and a score of 200 is much higher. For example, a bond fund I hold has a risk of 20 but not all are that low risk. I hold a global equity fund with a risk level of 200 although most are in the 90-100 range.1

FE Risk scores have their quirks and you need to understand that the risk score is relative to the FTSE100. FE update the bandings every quarter. i.e what they class as cautious , medium risk etc will have a new FE score range each quarter. It isnt static. There is also some recency bias. i.e. if a fund is capable of being volatile but hasnt been for over 3 years then it may get a lower score than it really deserves.patsy43 said:which is safest a lower or higer number is risk 10 a small risk and 90 a big risk or the other way round trying to decide what to put in my sipp
90 is not a big risk. Its the ballpark for conventional mainstream equity funds. 180 odd is big risk.
