in Cutting tax
My OH took a small amount from their pension last August paid emergency tax on it and finally got a refund on it. THen two months ago he got a tax code for this tax year which was wrong. After getting throu to HMRC they said they had took the pension as his main income and not his job. Hes employed full time and is a normal rate tax payer. They said they would change it and send a new correct tax code. Anyway just been paid the new wrong tax code is been used and hes just paid best part of £500 in income tax alone. They tax code they gave him was 485 instead of the normal 12895 or what ever the stand one is . Tried to contact them again today you go throu a few auto questions to answer then they say thank you goodbye not even a waiting to speak to someone option its a total joke. With cost of living etc every peny counts and yet now could wait forever to get it sorted. How can they make mistakes like this . Tonight hes attempted to sort it online but even then its a very long winded process

normal 12895 or what ever the stand one is .
Standard Personal Allowance is £12.570 (and frozen until 2028).

HMRC treat t he pension as the main source as that will a continuing source when employment has ceased and his employment record is closed.
By giving personal allowances to cover the pension amount it will be paid with outt ax being deducted.
it is no mistake to do this.
However , he can ask for all his personal allowances of 12570 to be set against his employment. which will result in any pension payment then being taxed.0 -
Success after doing it on line a new tax code has been issued . The overpayment last month will that be refunded by his employer or at end of tax year if its still owing by HMRC. ?0

For example when looking at his payslip he would see say 1257L or 1257L C if it was on a cumulative basis.
1257L X or 1257L NC if non cumulative.0 -

I'm retired and have state pension and two small private ones. For the last two years they allocated an incorrect code to my income which meant I had to pay tax and I just contacted them online each time and was refunded in the next monthly payment. I didn't have to wait until the following April. I assume your husband's refund will be the same. The employer just does whatever HMRC tells them to do.
On my own tax account this year, another different tax code has been allocated which means I have to pay some tax and unfortunately for me, this time it's right. Still, always worth checking and always worth challenging if you think it's wrong. If it isn't wrong, then they will explain why. Online is much better, I find - and far less frustrating. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts.
