Claiming HR tax relief on SIPP

Hi All

I'm sure this question must have been asked but I can't find a clear answer! I need to claim higher rate tax relief on my SIPP contributions for the last three years, but how do I do it? I've read that I don't need to complete a tax return, but can't see what info I need to send to HMRC or in what format/level of detail? I'd like to get the detail pulled together before I try to contact HMRC.

For background, I'm employed and have a workplace pension where tax relief is applied but I also have a SIPP with vanguard where the first 20% relief is applied to contributions.

many thanks

  • You just need to write to HMRC with a clear explanation of the RAS contributions paid in each tax year.

Personally I would set out the net and gross amounts for each tax year.

You can also call or write to HMRC to claim if you pay Income Tax at 40%.

If you decide to phone, make it very early in the morning and even then, prepare for a long wait.

And if you write, don't expect a quick response.

Does anyone know if I can download the detail from the Vanguard site? I can only see the overall contributions for each year which I think includes the 20% relief already applied

that's why I want to have the right info ready, so I don't have to be on hold for a long time and then be told to call back with more details!

Your Annual Benefit Statement breaks down this information. This is provided at tax year end and will be found in your "documents" section.

Does the workplace scheme use "Relief at Source" or "Net Pay"?

The old forms and notes here may help with this

Can you clarify this statement ? If 20% tax relief is applied to contributions to this pension, in the same way as with your Vanguard SIPP, then you need to inform HMRC of contributions to both.

However if workplace contributions are taken out before tax is applied or via Salary sacrifice, then you do not need to include them.

its an LGPS scheme, so I think it's before tax is applied?

It's an LGPS pension so I think that's net pay?
